“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the anniversary of our nation’s independence than to also acknowledge the freedom that came from the Supreme Court’s historic decision,” said Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell, who also serves on the Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. The bridge will light up red, white and blue in honor of the nation’s Independence Day. The popular bridge – which crosses the Grand River immediately north of Fulton Street – will be illuminated in rainbow colors – a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender pride – every night for a week starting Thursday July 2 through Friday July 10, 2015. will light up the historic Blue Bridge with the rainbow around the nation’s annual holiday celebrating freedom, self-determination and justice.
